The Oblique House
Taking inspiration from the geometry of the site, 2 architectural grids interlocks to cut away and reveal the spaces behind. Solid volumes are placed parallel/ perpendicular to the party wall while the ‘lighter’ elements of steel and glass follows the skew of the road.
The Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) cladded volume floats atop a linear volume of masonry expression and anchors the main geometry of the house, echoing the geometry of the party wall. In contrast to the solidity of the GFRC volume, the screen slices into the double storey volume and reveals the spaces behind. The screen and the skew of the windows not only offers privacy to the bedrooms and also lines up to catch the prevailing winds of the southeast monsoon.
Pockets of private gardens interspersed within the spaces not only helps to bring visual relief and light to the interior spaces but also helps to act as vertical shafts to release the heat buil-up in our tropical climate.
